Organization
The Department employs over 700 dedicated
professionals and is divided into three Bureaus: Uniform Patrol, Criminal
Investigations and Operational Services.
Trainee officers will be assigned to the Uniform
Patrol Bureau upon completion of basic training. Appointment to specialized units
within the Bureau is based on merit.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicant must be a United States citizen;
Applicant must be at least 21 years
of age;
Applicant must be a high school graduate or have
acquired a high school equivalency certificate (GED);
Applicant must be of good character and free
of criminal record. An in-depth background check will be made;
If a veteran, applicant must
have been honorably discharged.
Pay and Benefits
Officer Pay-$31,390 - $43,450
Incentive Pay-$750.00 yearly for a minimum of 80 hours college
credit toward a baccalaureate degree. $2,000.00 yearly for a Bachelors degree. $2,500.00 yearly for a Masters degree.
Supplemental pay of $500.00 monthly is given after
one year of service.
All uniforms and equipment are furnished.
Eleven paid holidays per year and military leave.
From 12 working days of vacation with three years
service to 24 working days of vacation with fifteen years of service. Sick leave
accrued at the same rate as vacation.
Retirement plan with employer contribution.
Free life insurance
Medical insurance with
the City paying 62% of the monthly premium.
Extra duty detail work available.
Take-home unit privileges.
Application Process
Applicants must pass the Civil Service exam to be
placed on the employment list.
Three letters of personal reference must be
submitted to the Recruiting section.
All applicants are screened using a Physical
Assessment exam. Academic Exam, Polygraph, Oral Interview, Psychological Evaluation
and Physical Exam including drug screening.
Applications for the Civil Service examination
are accepted for a thirty-day period prior to scheduled tests only. The scheduled
tests are advertised via local radio stations and the newspaper. The time, date,
etc., applications are accepted will be listed in the advertisement.
